SunTech Medical’s ambulatory blood pressure monitoring device, the Oscar 2, have a pediatric feature that many users may be unaware of. The Oscar 2 includes an automated pediatric threshold algorithm based on the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring in Children and Adolescents: Recommendations for Standard Assessment. The Oscar 2 ABPM has the ability to detect white coat hypertension (WCH), nocturnal hypertension, and masked hypertension while adjusting the thresholds accordingly.
As of July 2022, American Heart Association (AHA) has updated their statement for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in children and adolescents: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association. They discovered that there is a slight difference in the mean of both clinic and ambulatory blood pressure for children of 13 years or young than children older than 13. Because the Oscar 2 thresholds are currently based on the previous statement, users of the Oscar 2 may need to set custom thresholds to the new guidelines for this age difference. The Oscar 2 user manual provides readers with step by step instructions on how to set custom thresholds at any time on any report in section 10 pages 36 & 37. These new threshold settings are relevant to ambulatory blood pressure monitors (ABPM) by other manufacturers as well.
Note: Looking at the ABPM Statistics page will provide updated BP load and Asleep Dip if impacted. Reminder that the Mean values will not change as the BP values remain constant regardless of editing the threshold.
